LAWMA recorded 1,023 illegal waste dumping cases in 2025 – Report

The Lagos Waste Management Authority recorded 1,023 illegal dumping and waste management non-compliance incidents across the state in 2025, with 447 cases referred for legal action.

This is contained in LAWMA’s 2025 Waste Surveillance Statistics obtained exclusively by the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

A breakdown of the statistics shows that 230 males and 217 females were referred for prosecution, representing 51 per cent and 49 per cent respectively.

The surveillance operations also identified 431 scavengers and reconciled 145 properties with their assigned Private Sector Participation waste operators.

The authority disclosed that peak dumping periods occurred between midnight and early morning, with residential refuse, construction debris and hazardous waste prominent among offences.

LAWMA said the 2025 figures built on an intensified enforcement strategy carried into 2026, with officers stepping up surveillance and enforcement activities across the state.

It said enforcement teams from the agency’s Waste Surveillance, Investigation and Enforcement unit recently arrested multiple offenders for indiscriminate waste disposal at black spots across Lagos.

Earlier in 2026, LAWMA officials intercepted and seized waste carts used by unregulated collectors on Lagos Island.

Earlier in 2026, LAWMA officials intercepted and seized waste carts used by unregulated collectors on Lagos Island.

NAN reports that officials also arrested an individual seen dumping waste near Tinubu Square in the early hours of the morning as part of efforts to prevent the re-emergence of illegal dumpsites.

In addition, the agency’s enforcement team uncovered an unauthorised dumpsite along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, leading to the arrest of several cart pushers allegedly involved in illegal waste disposal.

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the agency would sustain enforcement activities to protect cleared sites from abuse.

“These sustained enforcement activities strengthen deterrence and protect cleared sites from renewed abuse.

“We are strategically deploying enforcement operatives across the state to eradicate persistent black spots and ensure compliance with environmental sanitation laws,” Gbadegesin said.

He reiterated the agency’s commitment to public education, enforcement and prosecution as integral components of its mandate to achieve a cleaner and healthier Lagos.

He urged residents to dispose of waste through authorised channels, patronise registered PSP operators and report illegal dumping through official LAWMA platforms.

NAN reports that LAWMA is a statutory agency of the Lagos State Government responsible for managing solid waste and sanitation across the state, established to address the growing challenge of waste generation driven by rapid urbanisation and population growth.

Air pollution is literally rewriting our DNA. New research links dirty air to the same cancer mutations found in smokers.

Air pollution can cause DNA mutations that have been linked to lung cancer, according to new research showing strong connections between polluted air and the same genetic changes often seen in smokers.  Scientists analyzed the cancer genomes of 871 non-smokers with lung cancer from four continents and found a clear pattern. People living in areas with high levels of air pollution had more mutations in key genes tied to lung cancer, namely TP53 and EGFR, and were nearly four times more likely to show the SBS4 mutation, a known result of exposure to tobacco smoke. These mutations were far less common in non-smokers from cleaner regions. The study also uncovered a new mutational signature, SBS40a, present in 28% of non-smokers but absent in smokers, with no clear environmental cause identified. The research compared these non-smoker genomes with 345 smoker genomes to show both shared and unique patterns.  Secondhand smoke was linked to only a small increase in these g...
